Scavengers – Rating Survival Games

Is Scavenegrs really a Survival game? Or is it a MOBA? The games calls itself a Survival royale, rather than a done again battle royale. Since it calls itself that, we will take a look at the game and grade it here as a survival game. Then we will tell you what we think it is!

Coming at us as a survival game can be a tricky thing to do. The trailer attempts to sale it as a survival game with battle royale elements. Is it though? or is it Fortnite with some survival elements slapped on top? Let’s get into it.

I enjoy survival games. I also enjoy MOBA’s.
What is a survival game? Survival games typically feature food & water consumption, resource management, sometimes building & crafting, and other survival mechanics that we all love.
What is a MOBA? Short for Multiplayer Online Battle Arena. DOTA, Warzone, Fortnite, Apex, these are examples of MOBA’s.

Rating Survival Games is a series of content where I rate games based on their survival elements. I have a tough grading rubric where I place the game’s survival aspects, and grade them accordingly. This is to keep bias off the table. Just because I like one game over another, doesn’t mean it is better overall.

Scavengers – RG1 rates Survival games

Scavengers is being sold (for free) as a survival royale title. This would make it essentially it’s own brand of barbecue as we have not seen that yet. Have we? I absolutely love the idea. How will it fair on our rating system?

Rust details:

Release date: in early access on PC
Publisher: Improbable
Developer: Midwinter Entertainment
ESRB rating: Not yet rated
Platforms: Microsoft Windows · Unreleased on -PlayStation 4 · Xbox One

It is tough to rate a game that isn’t fully released yet. This game is set in early access and only available on PC at this time.

It is very likely we are wasting our time by rating it, as the game can drastically change many times before it fully releases, and makes it down to consoles. Who knows what is to come. I am rating what I have seen and played so far.

Survival Rating System

There are so many things that go into ranking a survival game. Most survival games have their own spin on the game itself, but have many similar elements. Scavengers is taking a very unique approach with this game. This is a survival battleground. I adore the idea. How do they pull it off? We’ll discuss it. Survival games will be able to earn 10 points per aspect plus 30 points can come solely from creativity. For a total possible score of 100. So let’s break down Scavengers.

Resource management

Resources are needed to last you through each mission. There is very little resource gathering in the game however. This is very much not like a survival game in this aspect for Scavengers. Resource management elements do exist, but they aren’t in line with a survival game imo.

Points: 2

Crafting & Building

There is very little building in the game. There is minimal crafting -but both of these aspects are not worthy of a survival game.

Points: 1

Survivability

This MOBA pits you against an environment and against players that are easily within your skill set. You will have a great chance at survival whether you’re a noob or pro. The storm, the treacherous winter, and other environmental concerns are all beautiful, but unmastered.

Points: 3

Gameplay

Graphics and gameplay are above average. Scavengers is a beautiful world, with a great player base, and an absolute blast to play. Graphically, it is stunning. Not perfect, but very polished. Combat is very unique though reminds me of a number of games. Great fun.

Points: 9

Story

The story is neat. It explains why the world is the way it is, and why you are scavenging. It gives you a reason to play all it’s own. The story doesn’t enhance progression.

Points: 8

Open worldliness

The world does feel open even though t isn’t. It is a typical MOBA where a storm is closing in on you, pushing you toward an objective.

Points: 5

PvE versus PvP

PvE elements are witnessed. This game is very much geared toward PvP; however, one can go around killing bunnies and other wildlife for food. The weather can be very harsh as well. This does give me a feel for PvE, but it has its limits. PvP is great fun here. Combat is very fun and rewarding.

PvE: 4 – PvP: 9.5 – Overall (we’ll round up): 7

Creativity

Scavengers could have easily gotten a perfect 30 with creativity had they nailed this game idea. A survival battleground frankly is damn genius. They did not nail it. This is 95% MOBA / 5% Survival, and that is being generous. As a survival game, the creative mark is garbage. The idea was there, so not a total loss.

Points: 15

Scavengers – Overall Survival Rating?
50 / 100

50 out of 100 as a survival game seems fair. This absolutely is not a survival game. It does offer some survival aspects, but this is definitely a MOBA through and through. Great fun though. If you like MOBA’s, it’s a great game for you. (maybe I’ll rate it as a MOBA in the future) Whether you love it or hate it let us know on Facebook
